Season Finale Round-Up

I sort of love television. A lot. Sometimes more so than movies. I think it's because I adore characters and learning about characters and watching them grow and change and experience life. And yes, good movies do give us memorable characters. But in television, we get to watch their stories unfold over time, we get to grow with them, we get to turn in each week and wonder what's going to happen.

So yes, I watch a fair amount of television. And that being the case, I've decided that I should talk more on this blog about some of the shows I'm watching, starting with a little roundup of thoughts on my favorite recent season finales. (Yes, I have chosen to start talking more about television at a time when most shows are on hiatus. Whatever.)

Season Finales

Community

This show sneakily became my favorite show of the season. I've fallen in love with the antics and "weird little relationship" of Troy and Abed; with Shirley as the tough but sweet Christan single mom; with Britta's quirkiness and Annie's intensity and Jeff's snark; and yes, even with Pierce's oddly endearing ignorance. Meta humor abounds (the paintball episode that parodied Die Hard and 28 Days Later and basically every other action movie ever, was absolute epic perfection) and yet, there's a sweetness and a heart behind it all so that in the end you're really just rooting for this entire ragtag study group to always be BFF's 4Life.

The finale spun the typical love triangle drama as Prof. Slater and Britta battled it out for Jeff's affection (all this was interlaced of course with jokes about jumping the shark and the consumption of a giant cookie and men in dalmatian costume and Ken Jeong punching John Oliver in the face with a roll of quarters) but everything got turned on its head when Jeff ends up making out with Annie as the screen fades to black. And yes, I realize that there's supposed to be like a sixteen-some-odd-year difference between Jeff and Annie but I don't care. Joel McHale and Alison Brie have kickass chemistry and those kisses were kind of hot. Plus, their characters just somehow make adorable sense together. I don't expect that any sort of romantic entanglement will ever take center stage on this show but I'm intrigued to see how it will all go down next season.

Chuck

I'm always so pleasantly surprised at how well this show does season finales. Last year we got, "Guys, I know Kung-fu." Now we get a whole new story about Chuck's mom and the Bartowski's involvement in the spy world. Plus the added knowledge that Chuck's had an Intersect in his head since he was a young boy. Interesting.

This entire finale was super stressful and sad - I used to think of Shaw as basically worthless to the whole show but by the end I really just wanted to punch Brandon Routh in the face. But I'm glad that Ellie knows about the spy stuff now and I maintain that the team-up of John Casey and Morgan and Captain Awesome needs to happen as often as possible - I'm already a huge fan of the possibility of a relationship between Casey's daughter and Morgan.

I remember back in Season One I was unsure of how the main concept of the show could be maintained by somehow the show runners have managed to keep it fresh and interesting. I'm so relieved that we're pasty the angsty drama of Sarah and Chuck and I'm excited to see where the show goes next year. Also, no more Buy More? I really didn't think it would actually blow up. Poor Jeffster on the run.

Parks and Recreation

The amount that this show has improved since the first season kind of blows my mind. It has now become one of my favorite parts of Thursday Nights (and NBC, I kind of hate you for pushing it back to midseason). The entire city of Pawnee is zany and weird and exaggerated and so much fun. Leslie Knopp has become so much more than a female Michael Scott and her relationship with Ron Swanson rivals that of Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy over on 30 Rock. And seriously, how cute are April and Andy? Their little high five after admiring they had feelings for each other? I mean come on, that's special. But, for the sake of cliffhanger drama, April finds out that Andy and Ann kissed and now everything is uncertain for them. Although, the fact that once again, Rashida Jones is playing a character on the wrong end of a love triangle, kind of cracks me up. Oh, and I approve of the addition of Adam Scott. I think he'll be a good foil for Amy Poehler.

Castle

This was probably the most frustrating season finale this year. And maybe one of the only ones that really ended on a cliffhanger for me. Of course, of course Becket would realize she has feelings for Castle just as he seemingly gets back with his ex. And is that the end of Michael Trucco on the show? I need his pretty face on my television screen more often. I’m not really worried about whether Castle will return to work with Becket – without that there’s no show - but I hope next season doesn’t sink into romantic drama shenanigans.

Greek

I know this one ended awhile ago but I’m including it here. So Cappie and Casey broke up and I’m not terribly shocked. I actually thought she had some really nice chemistry with the political guy (the one that also plays Joan’s douche of a rapist husband on Mad Men). I know next season is the last one so I’m curious to see where everyone ends up. And in regards to the Cappie/Casey/will they/won’t they - whatever. I’m more curious as to whether Evan and Cappie are going to make up and be friends again. Last season I LOVED when they were getting along again. More of that please.

Random Thoughts: I love The Big bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and The Office but honestly, those finales bored me a little bit. Nothing much to talk about or discuss. Which makes me sad, especially with The Office because they have always done finales SO well ( the Casino Night kiss that ended Season Two still ranks as my favorite season finale ever).

Shows I'm Watching This Summer:

Friday Night Lights

What can you say? It’s just a gorgeous show. I’m a couple of episodes behind but I like how the new characters are being incorporated. I’m a little sad to see that JD McCoy has become such a jerk though and I actively want to reach through the television and punch his smug father in the face. But Mr. and Mrs. Coach still have the best relationship on television and I am now an official East Dillon Lions fan.
